More than 75 participants from mass organizations, civil society organizations, trade unions, and Government ministries participated actively in the Lao national consultation on the ASEAN Declaration on the protection and promotion of the rights of migrant workers. The participants shared information on the situation of the Lao migrant workers and make recommendation to better protect the rights of migrants workers. The recommendations include proposals for creating decent employment opportunities in Lao for all workers, and to ensure migrant workers in Laos and overseas are provided with decent working and living conditions, and terms of employment that respects core labour standards. Cambodian civil society at the consultation develop comprehensive recommendations on the rights of migrant workers to both the Royal Government of Cambodia (RGC) and to ASEAN. There were representatives from over 60 NGOs, trade unions, private sector companies, and civil society organizations, gathered on September 11-12, 2008 at the Phnom Penh Hotel in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, to discuss the current situation faced by migrant workers leaving the country to work overseas and migrant workers entering the country.
