On May 7, 2008, the Task Force on ASEAN Migrant Workers, led by the Task Force convener Sinapan Samydorai, and accompanied by representatives of key Thai members of the Task Force, met with Dr. Anish Kumar Roy, the Director of the Bureau of Resources Development of the ASEAN Secretariat -- on the sidelines of the ASEAN Senior Labour Officials Meeting (SLOM) and ASEAN Labor Ministers Meeting (ALMM).

The Task Force recommendations: The ASEAN Labour Ministers Meeting (ALMM) now formally launch the ASEAN Committee to Implement the Declaration on the Protection and Promotion of the Rights of Migrant Workers. Next, the ASEAN Committee to Implement the Declaration on the Protection and Promotion of the Rights of Migrant Workers form a civil society advisory council to provide the opportunity for genuine participation of all stakeholders in the Committee's deliberations.

ASEAN Forum on Labour Migration - Task Force Activities Reported, 24-25 April 2008

Task Force on ASEAN Migrant Workers member Migrant Forum in Asia reported on the Task Force consultation activities and presented key elements of the Civil Society –Trade Union Position Paper for the ASEAN Instrument on the Promotion and Protection of the Rights of Migrant Workers. While the forum was a closed door event among ASEAN leaders, Task Force member Migrant Forum in Asia [MFA] was invited to speak on migration issues and concern.

Indonesian Civil Society Consultation forms National Committee, 15 April 2008

15 April 2008, TF AMW consultation-workshop, 36 participant from more then 20 organizations reviewed the 12 May 2007 National Consultation recommendations and decided to form a National Committee to follow-up on the various recommendations. The concluding statement was given to the Mr. Tianchye Tan, Human Resources Unit. ASEAN Secretariat, on April 16 together with the Task Force on ASEAN Migrant Workers annual activities report.

Vietnam National Consultation on the promotion and protection of the rights of migrant workers

Vietnam has been sending workers abroad since 1980. From 10,000 migrant workers in 15 countries and territories in 1995, the number of labourers has increased to 500,000 in 40 countries and territories at present. The recent revelation of poor living and working conditions for many Vietnamese workers overseas underscores a dire need protect labourer rights.
